After working various jobs since graduating from Gresham High School in 2007, Brent Berkholtz and his wife, Raven, who he met in 2018, decided it was time for a change and started a junk-hauling business in Clintonville in April.
“We wanted more personal freedom in life and to be able to spend more time with our son, who we welcomed into the world in 2023. We decided it was time to go all in to start our own business. One day, I was scrolling my phone as we were sitting on the couch, and I said to Raven, ‘what about renting dumpsters?’ She didn’t even hesitate, she said ‘let’s go for it.’ By the end of April, after doing all the research and figuring out what we needed to get started, we started WBR Disposal.”
The company offers 14-yard and 18-yard dumpster rentals as well as curbside pickup and junk-removal services such as deck and hot tub removal, house/cabin and garage cleanouts, brush clean up and fleet hauling for excavating companies tearing down old buildings.
Berkholtz uses a 3/4-quarter-ton pickup truck with a gooseneck hookup to deliver and haul the dumpsters. When full, the dumpsters get pulled up onto a custom trailer with a wench and tilt deck and get hauled to a waste-disposal site.
“Its a great set up for our truck,” he said. “We are able to get our dumpster into some spots other big hook trucks are not able to go.”
To get the business rolling, Berkholtz said they used money they had saved to acquire three 14-yard dumpsters and one 18-yard dumpster.
“I had experience with driving some bigger trucks and pulling trailers in my younger years, so there was no fear in starting this kind of business,” he said, “and Raven had experience in office and administration work before we had our child.”
Serving communities such as Shawano, Clintonville, New London, Bowler, Wittenberg, Keshena, Seymour and Pulaski, WBR is a non-hazardous junk hauling business.
“We cannot have batteries, paint cans with paint (dry, open lids only), gas, oil, chemicals — anything hazardous to the earth cannot go in our dumpsters. We don’t mix trash with metal, so we bring barrels to separate items when we do cleanups. We also don’t mix tires with our trash, but we will pick up a full load of tires only. We also don’t take cement blocks, driveway chunks or foundation material.”
Berkholtz said they always take a peek inside the dumpster before dumping.
“Any big items such as refrigerators, hot water heaters, freezers, TVs, VCRs, computers, DVD players, metal — anything of that sort are all separate charges at the landfill,” he said. “Always be careful what you throw away, but if  you just want it gone, we’ll haul it away.”
“With our setup we can haul up to five tons, but it is difficult to get that much weight in a dumpster,” he said. “We like to keep it at three tons to keep our equipment healthy.”
WBR offers its 14-yard dumpsters for $275 for one full day. That price includes 1,000 pounds of weight. Anything over 1,000 pounds is billed at $83 a ton at the Shawano transfer site and the customer will have the extra weight charge added to the rental fee.
The company also offers 1-3 day rentals for $375 plus the charge for weight over 1,000 pounds. The 18-yard dumpster is $425 for three days with the 1,000-pound weight payment included.
“If we have a fleet hauling job, I take all our dumpsters to the tear-down site and have the excavators fill them up, and I start making trips back and forth to the dump,”  Berkholtz  said. “I like to call it giving these guys a little more fire power.”
Since it’s April launch, WBR has also done a few barn cleanouts, mulch deliveries and property cleanups removing brush and other unwanted shrubs and small trees.
“Our curbside pick-up is not necessarily an end-of-the-driveway pick-up,” he said. “We had a couple customers send us photos of where their junk pile is on the property, we show up, back the trailer right up to the junk pile, throw the junk in the dumpster and haul it away.”
Looking ahead, Berkholtz said he hopes to add a second roll-off truck and trailer. And he and Raven are planning to give back to the community as soon as they can.
“When we get our feet on the ground, we’d love to donate to area youth leagues, sponsor events and hold a customer appreciation event every year.”
